Today’s wedding DJ interview is with Omari Fennell, Owner of Generation C Entertainment! Enjoy:
Tell us about yourself and how you started playing.
I started DJing back in 2006. That year, my church put on an event and hired a DJ to play music. That DJ was terrible and played the same songs over and over again. He played music that he liked and disregarded the crowd’s preferences. From that experience, I realized that there was a need for DJ services that customize music for the client’s tastes (and not the DJ).

What do you love about being a musician?
I love when the night is coming to an end, and everyone wants to keep dancing.
What’s your favorite song to play?
Whatever song makes the most composed person at an event lose control and get on the dance floor.
What is the most challenging part of your job?
The most challenging aspects of my job include grabbing the mic away from someone that is toasting too long and fending off drunken uncles that only want their music requests played.
What’s the most unique wedding you’ve ever played for?
I did a wedding where the bride and groom were both professional ballet dancers. The dancing that they and their bridal party did that night was out of this world.
Do you have advice for wedding musicians just starting out?
If you are starting out as a wedding DJ, you should probably learn the different activities of a normal wedding and how they can vary based on the couple’s preferences. In the case that they do not have a wedding planner, it is still your job to make sure the day is planned out and that everything runs smoothly.
What are some things couples should look for when looking for a musician?
Couples should consider a potential DJ’s past wedding experience, reviews, and personality. In addition, some DJ’s specialize in certain types of music, so check out their mixes.
