Today’s photographer interview is with Michaela and Josh of Moose Studios, based in Southern California! Enjoy:
Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.
Hi Friends! We are California and Destination Wedding Photographers Josh and Michaela – high school sweethearts and best friends. We are based in Newport Beach, California but are constantly traveling for weddings and random adventures! When we aren’t traveling, we are either restoring our 1976 Vintage Airstream, or at home relaxing with our adorable cat Luna and catching up on Netflix.

It is such a privilege to get to work side by side with the person you love most. We feel honored to be invited into the lives of our bride and grooms on such an important day. We ensure our you are very well taken care, and give each of our couples the full Moose Studio Wedding Experience. We believe brides deserve more than just great images. We are here to make sure from the moment you inquire with us, you are treated like the most special person in the world, because you are!
How did you get into wedding photography?
That’s kind of a funny story! In May 2014, I applied for my passport, boarded my first plane and flew over 1700 miles with Josh to photograph our first destination wedding in Canada. When we returned home, I quit my full-time job as a preschool teacher, and dedicated my time to Moose Studio and building resources for other photographers to do the same!
What is your favorite part of the wedding day to capture?
Our absolute favorite part of the wedding day is the bride and groom portraits. This is such an intimate, romantic time of the wedding day. We love being able to spend time capturing the love story behind each couple.
What is the most awkward moment you’ve experienced while on the job?
Well, there have been quite a few since we started photographing weddings. The most awkward moment by far though was at a wedding we shot in San Diego. The bride was secretly a chain smoker, and had us hide her during various times of the wedding day so that she could smoke a cigarette pack. She hid this habit not only from her family and friends, but also her fiance. We managed to fulfill her request, but it was definitely awkward!
What is your favorite venue and why?
We love outdoor venues! Nothing can beat the natural beauty of nature. We recently shot at the Mission San Juan Capistrano, and the history of the building was breath-taking. Regardless of the wedding venue, we would love to shoot your wedding and capture memories that will last for generations to come.
Nikon or Canon?
We strongly believe that the camera brand does not make a difference. We began shooting with Canon simply because our family used Canon. However, it is the photographer that creates the images, not the brand of camera!
What is your dream location to shoot a wedding?
Our dream location to shoot a wedding would be in Italy. Josh is Canadian and I am Italian, so I would love to shoot in the country where my heritage resides. However, anytime that we get to travel for a wedding, we are pretty excited!
If you could shoot any celebrity wedding (past, present or future), who would be the lucky couple?
Hmm, this is a hard question. I don’t believe we have a preference for this one!
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding photographers just getting started?
The biggest lesson we have learned, is that consistency is the key to success. Consistently posting on social media, consistently blogging, consistently following up with clients, and consistently giving the best wedding photography experience we can offer to them. If you are just starting out, master your camera, and then dive into the business behind wedding photography.
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are looking to hire a photographer to cover their big day?
Follow your heart. Find the photographer whose images speak to you and then contact them. You don’t want to wait until the last minute only to find that the photographer you want is already booked for your wedding date. If budget is an issue, reach out to them anyways! They may be able to work within your budget, or create a custom package for you. It is often easy to go with the photographer your venue may recommends, or your uncle who has a fancy camera, but keep in mind that there are no redos for your wedding day, so choose wisely, and do your research!
